It definitely makes getting a self-contained oil pan/container (like I've got) a lot easier to get under the bike and you don't have wriggle like a snake on the ground to get to the oil plug and oil filter. Just make sure you either use another ramp or a properly-sized block for your kick stand and have it lined up before you roll the front tire up on the ramp or you'll have 700+lbs of British steel laying on its left side!

Just noticed something....dipstick is very hard to read. By the the time I swirl it 4 full turns and un-swirl it,
the indication is dubious, at best.

So, I was sitting on the bike (kickstand down, engine off, but warm) and set it up straight.

I pulled the dipstick from the seated position and noticed I could just plug it in straight, like a cork.

I wondered if it could reach the oil..OH yeah.

Half way up the bottom span of the stick, plunged down, not screwed in = nominal oil level.

Something to verify with your bikes, if you will, kind sirs. It's a very clear indication.

I finally got mine changed. I was 1,000 miles over the 6k service. After having to take back one filter tool to get another because the exhaust crossover pipe was in the way of the filter wrench. Then the dang thing was super tight., plus the dealer charged me $3.09 for a washer that was the wrong size. At a weak moment I almost said the hell with it, and was going to take it to the dealer but I persevered. Eventually I would like to get a hydraulic lift. I saw one at harbor freight on sale for $288. It would make things alot easier.

I managed to have a serious blond moment and picked up 4 litres of 15w50 instead of 15W40

Would it still be an acceptable oil to use in the bird - or should I write it off and get the 15W40

I am (almost) embarrised to say - $35/4 litres

New philosophy - change oil every 5k, filter every 10 - and don't worry about expensive oil!

Re:Your concern about getting debris into the oil when you check the oil level.

Fast Eddy has solved that problem, He has developed and sells and extendable dip stick in either Polished Aluminium or in Anodised Black. I have bought 2 one for Myself and one for Me Mates Bird.It solves the probelm.

Just did the oil and filter change, piece of cake, except, I have a Storm and at least 5 liters came out of this thing, does the Storm hold more oil? I only bought 4 and now I think I need another liter. I even checked the manual and noticed that the manual states 1600cc's! Do I have the wrong manual or is there only one? Was supposed to ride in the morn and like you guys said I can't even tell if there is oil on the dipstick. I just sprayed it with black plasti-dip but need to wait until it dries for a few hours to try and check the oil again. I hope someone sees this soon, thanks.

Spec is 4.2 liters or 4.43 quarts. Fill it and ride, same specs for 1600 and 1700, just 100cc bigger.

I just changed my oil and filter last night and measured the amount as another gentleman on here asked me how much I put in.With the oil hot,and crankcase drained thoroughly [10-15 minutes] and a new filter installed, the total was 4 qts. and 24 oz.That put the oil level as measured on the dip stick,[motorcycle standing straight] on the second mark or a smidge above it.And should you overfill it,you'll note that in the bottom of your air box there is a little breather hole, and it will be full of oil and ,depending on just how much over full you are,on the air filter too.Ya know the thing in the air box that some dummy recently put in upside down!! Dummy Dave!!!

That equates to 0.30 L too much, Dave, & I guess it's a good thing the oil filters are idiot proof. !!

Hi Dave .
I just had to add my bit.
Did you take the plastic cover off the oil filter before installation ,to allow the oil into the filter.???????
Just asking as you have been having a shocker recently.
Cheers.
Steve

Don't you let them bully you Dave ... or mess with your head. Go and have a couple of shots of single malt and a little nap and it'll be fine.

So, I have to do an oil and filter change on my beast ... least ways I will when I can get the fecker started. Someone up the post asked what size washer it took. The bloke in the dealership gave me a couple of aluminium (correct spelling BTW) washers 15mm ID. He also said that these things were dished (concave/convex depending on your view point) and have to go in correctly. Now I wasn't paying real attention at this point as there was a rather attractive young lady trying on some leathers and I couldnt avert my gaze in time ....
Having got home I looked at these washers and yeah they are indeed dished ... can I remember which way he said put em in? Can I f#ck.

The dished part will face the drain bolt/plug.And actually,a flat copper washer will work too.I bought a package of 5 at a local auot parts store AND paid less money then what the stealer charges ya for one. That's what I use as I've changed my oil umpteen times over the last four years and almost 77,000 miles I've driven it.And these AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH "gentlemen" aren't bullying me.They're just capitolizing on my stupidity, and rightfully so cause I deserve it for bein so fuckin numb. Dave!!!

And DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN the plug or strip the threads.Snug it and alittle more should do the trick.Or follow the torque spec in the book. And check it for leaks or seepage AFTER the motor has WARMED UP.In other words, don't create a problem that ya didn't have before. Ca Pishe??? Dave!!!
